Applegreen built its business in Ireland on an explicit low-fuel-price promise, using food and coffee franchises to make up the margin. It brought the same model to Britain and to a number of motorway service areas.
The UK estate is smaller than the Irish one and includes both standalone forecourts and service-area sites, which price very differently: an Applegreen motorway site follows motorway pricing, while a roadside one competes with whatever is nearby.
Because a share of the network sits in Ireland and Northern Ireland, where fuel is cheaper than in Great Britain for reasons of duty and competition, national brand averages that include those sites read lower than a like-for-like British comparison would.
