How these comparisons are built
Each chain’s figure is the median price across every one of its forecourts currently reporting to the government Fuel Finder scheme, calculated in the database rather than sampled. The median rather than the mean, because a handful of very dear sites — remote forecourts, motorway services — pull an average upward past anything a normal driver pays.
Brands are matched on a canonical name, so “BP”, “BP Connect” and the various spellings the feed uses for a single chain count as one network, and a forecourt that merely has those letters in its name does not. That distinction matters more than it sounds: a loose match once put BP at the top of the cheapest-brand table on the strength of one unrelated site.
The number that decides your fill-up is not on these pages, though — it is the price at the forecourts within a few miles of you, which vary far more than the brands do. Search your postcode, or read whether branded fuel is different and how far is worth driving for a cheaper price.
