About Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's forecourts sit alongside its larger stores, which puts the estate's centre of gravity in London, the South East and the Midlands. In much of the South it is one of the few genuinely cheap options within a short drive, because the supermarket alternatives are thinner on the ground there than they are in the North.

Nectar is the loyalty layer, and Sainsbury's has periodically run Nectar Prices promotions on fuel that cut a few pence for cardholders. As with Clubcard, the headline price on the sign is not quite the price a regular customer pays.

On raw pence per litre, Sainsbury's tends to track Asda, Tesco and Morrisons closely — the four rarely sit more than two or three pence apart nationally, and which one leads changes month to month.

Where Sainsbury's forecourts are

Coverage explains a good deal of what looks like brand pricing. Fuel is cheaper in some regions than others whatever the sign says, so a chain weighted towards the cheaper ones shows a lower national average without any of its sites pricing unusually.
