E10 petrol prices today
E10 is the standard unleaded petrol sold at almost every UK forecourt. It contains up to 10% bioethanol, which is why it replaced E5 as the default grade in September 2021.
Between a typically cheap forecourt and a typically dear one there is 10.9p a litre — about £6.00 on a 55-litre tank. That gap is the whole reason to check before filling up.

Can my car use E10?
Almost all petrol cars built since 2011 are approved for E10, and the Department for Transport puts compatibility at over 95% of petrol vehicles on UK roads. The exceptions are mostly cars registered before 2002, some early-2000s models, classic cars, and certain mopeds and scooters. If your vehicle is not compatible, E5 super unleaded remains available at most larger forecourts and is the recommended alternative.
Does E10 cost more to run?
E10 contains slightly less energy per litre than E5, so fuel economy typically falls by around 1%. On a car returning 45 mpg that is roughly half a mile per gallon — usually far less than the price gap between E10 and E5, which commonly runs to 15p or more per litre. For most drivers E10 remains the cheaper choice per mile even after the efficiency difference.
Why do E10 prices vary so much between forecourts?
Wholesale fuel costs and fuel duty are broadly the same nationwide, so the difference you see at the pump comes from local competition, site running costs, and how each retailer prices against nearby rivals. Supermarket forecourts consistently price below branded sites because fuel draws customers to the store. Motorway services sit at the other extreme, where a captive audience and high rents push prices well above the national average.

Is E10 bad for my engine?
For compatible vehicles — over 95% of petrol cars on UK roads — E10 causes no harm. In older and classic vehicles, ethanol can degrade some rubber, plastic and fibreglass components over time, which is why E5 super unleaded remains available.
