Why is diesel more expensive than petrol?
Diesel and petrol carry identical fuel duty in the UK, so the gap at the pump comes from wholesale costs. Diesel is a globally traded product with demand from haulage, agriculture, shipping and heating, and Europe has long imported a large share of it. When that supply tightens — through refinery outages, sanctions or shipping disruption — diesel moves independently of petrol. That is why the gap between the two is not fixed and has ranged from a couple of pence to more than twenty.
Does the diesel premium change through the year?
Yes. Diesel and heating oil are refined from the same middle distillate stream, so northern hemisphere winter demand tends to firm diesel prices relative to petrol, while petrol strengthens over the summer driving season. Supply shocks routinely overwhelm this seasonal pattern, so it is a tendency rather than a rule.
Is premium diesel worth paying for?
Premium diesel typically costs 10 to 20p more per litre and contains additional detergents and cetane improvers. Manufacturers of high-performance and heavily worked engines sometimes recommend it, and it can help clear injector deposits in an engine that has been neglected. For an ordinary, well-maintained car doing normal mileage, independent testing has not found a fuel-economy gain that recovers the extra cost.
