Asda has used fuel as a headline price signal for decades. When the supermarket chains moved into forecourts in the 1990s they broke a market that had been shared between the oil majors, and Asda was the most aggressive of them: national price caps announced in the press, cuts timed to school holidays, and a deliberate refusal to price differently from one town to the next.
That national pricing policy is the thing to understand about Asda. Where most retailers price site by site against whoever is across the road, Asda has historically set one price across its estate. It makes Asda the cheapest forecourt in expensive areas and merely average in cheap ones — which is why a driver in one town swears by it and a driver sixty miles away does not see the point.
The Competition and Markets Authority named Asda specifically in its 2023 road fuel market study, finding that the chain had widened its fuel margins and no longer played the price-leader role it once did. The gap to the branded forecourts narrowed as a result. Asda still tends to sit in the cheaper half of the table, but the days of it being reliably the cheapest name in Britain are not guaranteed to return.

Coverage explains a good deal of what looks like brand pricing. Fuel is cheaper in some regions than others whatever the sign says, so a chain weighted towards the cheaper ones shows a lower national average without any of its sites pricing unusually.
