About Gulf

Gulf is one of the oldest names in the oil business and, in Britain, one of the smallest networks carrying a globally recognised sign. The UK estate is supplied by Certas Energy and consists almost entirely of independently owned forecourts, many in rural and semi-rural locations.

Rural weighting matters for the price. Forecourts with no nearby competitor price higher almost everywhere in the country, so a network concentrated in those locations will show a higher national average without any of its operators pricing unusually. Gulf sites in competitive towns are frequently much cheaper than the brand average suggests.

For drivers in areas with few alternatives, a Gulf forecourt is often simply the nearest fuel — which makes checking the live price before setting off more useful than comparing brand averages.

Coverage explains a good deal of what looks like brand pricing. Fuel is cheaper in some regions than others whatever the sign says, so a chain weighted towards the cheaper ones shows a lower national average without any of its sites pricing unusually.
